An unforgettable day supporting young athletes in our community

Community, remembrance, and opportunity came together during this year’s Jason Rivera & Wilbert Mora Basketball Classic—a powerful memorial tournament honoring two fallen Hispanic officers of the New York City Police Department. The event united police departments and youth organizations from across the United States around a shared purpose: to uplift young athletes while honoring the legacy of service and sacrifice.

Hundreds of children traveled from cities and counties including Newark, Camden, Atlantic City, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Syracuse, Buffalo, Bridgeport, Boston, Reading, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, Tampa, Houston, and New York City. On the court, they showcased not only their athletic skills, but also teamwork, discipline, and community pride—values that extend far beyond the game.

The Classic stood as more than a competition. It was a living tribute that transformed loss into purpose, creating a safe and inspiring space where young people could connect with mentors, peers, and role models. Through basketball, the event fostered confidence and belonging, reinforcing the idea that community support can open doors and change trajectories.

A particularly meaningful component of the day was the support provided for college scholarships for the children of fallen officers. This commitment to education reflects the enduring impact of collective action—ensuring that remembrance is paired with tangible opportunities for the next generation.

We are grateful to the organizers, volunteers, partners, and families who made this unforgettable day possible. Events like this remind us that when communities come together to honor heroes and invest in youth, we build pathways toward resilience, empowerment, and hope—on and off the court.
